Question Vegans, what is the most ethical thing to do with my leather clothes?
So, I have a lot of leather clothes from before I turned vegan. I don't want to throw them away because that would be a waste but if I wear them I feel like I am advocated killing animals for skin. I guess I could use them as a tool to provoke people into discussion about animal rights. What do you think is the most ethical use of my leather goods?
Best Answer I believe that the most ethical course of action with those leather item is to "let go" of them with reverence. How does one treat a remnant of a living being (who was, in all likelihood, killed mercilessly) with dignity? By wearing it? By donating it? By utilizing it until it wears out or falls apart so as to maximize its "utility?" The answers are No, No and No. These are all acts of desecration, equivalent to spitting upon their pain and misery, allured perhaps by the sheen of glamor or the desire to seem charitable. Leather is an inanimate thing, but we aren't. We are still alive, still capable of expressing some basic decency towards the memories of those who died. Burn or bury the items, say a silent prayer for those who died, and continue to do so for fashion and food. But please do not continue to abuse them by "using" them. As for provoking a discussion, invite friends over for a ritual. They will laugh at its somberness and you will no doubt be distinctly uncomfortable, but within those reactions lies the truth of the ugliness of who we are. The most pragmatic? Another question altogether, but it's not the question you asked. Edit: The animals didn't "die," they were brutally killed for their leather. They didn't march up to be sacrificed for you, so animals having "died in vain" is a ridiculous argument. Besides, a number of you need to improve your spelling, in addition to your understanding of "ethics."
